Stay True To The Act
Just thought I'd drop an update on our latest campaign in Latin America.
Working with the team in Miami and the wonderful national groups across the region, we launched JusticIA yesterday afternoon.
You can find our website HERE- as well as follow the campaign via our social media channels.
The campaign is built around a coalition of 35 creative and cultural organisations across Latin America who have signed our joint statement.
The statement urges governments, technology companies, and industry leaders to protect and preserve the intellectual property rights of authors, artists, producers and publishers.
The key principles include respect for copyright, transparency with how AI uses work and acknowledging that AI is a powerful tool but cannot replace creativity.
The Miami team also hosted a fantastic launch webinar, where they had voices from artists and execs from the region, and we are looking at how we can continue to deploy the statement.
Like the European campaign of Stay True To The Act, artist engagement has been a key element - and you can find the range of artists standing behind the movement HERE.
We will continue to grow this coalition - and I will keep you posted on the ongoing developments.
IFPI in India
IFPI has also continued its on-the-ground efforts over the summer, engaging with last week's All About Music Conference.
Travelling to Mumbai, Vikki delivered a keynote speech at the conference, underlining some of our key messages around AI and music.
Not only did she emphasise India’s position as a great global music powerhouse, but also how the decisions we make now will shape the next decade of music.
"We must choose a path that values creativity, protects human expression, and champions fairness for everyone in the industry. We must never forget that music is made by people, for people," she said in her speech.
The speech got great coverage - and I've linked to the Music Business Worldwide piece here if of interest.
On the topic of AI, I thought I'd share an interesting article recently published by the BBC.
The piece follows Emily Portman, a British singer that had a whole AI-generated album imitating her work posted on streaming services.
"It was called Orca, and it was music that was evidently AI-generated, but it had been cleverly trained, I think, on me," Portman says.
It follows the growing trend of artists being targeted by fake albums or songs that suddenly appear on their pages on Spotify and other streaming services.
Even dead musicians have had AI-generated "new" material added to their catalogues, the piece says.
The article could be used to show policymakers how AI isn't just impacting big artists - but also the smaller, up-and-coming musicians.
