Music Companies’ Response to Environmental Issues 音樂公司對環境問題的回應

Music has always used its powerful voice to bring about positive change. This is true of environmentalism, where music has inspired the policies and real-world actions that have powered significant environmental movements, from the protest songs of the first Earth Day to concerts that showcase environmental activist groups.

Environmental responsibility is increasingly a core priority of IFPI’s members and together they are exploring ways to tackle climate change through internal and external initiatives around the world. Here are just some examples of the work being done by music companies in this space.

Energy and Waste Reduction

The environmental impact of recorded music has changed as it has transitioned to more streaming and less production of physical products. In light of the business model transformation, music companies are evaluating their environmental footprint and the best ways to help reduce the environmental impacts of their work, notably music streaming. They are doing so by learning from and building on the significant efforts many major streaming companies have put into using clean technology and reducing carbon emissions as part of longer-term commitments to contribute to fight climate change.

Warner Music Group has conducted sustainability assessments in some of its key offices and is working on plans to reduce its energy and waste footprints. For example, initiatives to reduce its environmental impacts, which have been driven by the momentum of employees, include carbon offsetting of travel and using electric or hybrid vehicles.

In terms of waste reduction, several Warner Music Group offices have begun to eliminate single use plastics within their offices. Other workplace initiatives include waste recycling, adoption of e-signatures and sending hard copy mail using climate neutral providers

At Sony Music UK, a member of the company’s Environmental Committee created a ‘carbon calculator tool’, which allows the user to piece together a music product from a list of drop-down packaging options, with each option showing what the potential carbon footprint would be per element. This tool enables employees to assess the environmental impact of products such as casings and make adjustments where necessary.

Sony Music Group supported Earth Day 2021 by encouraging employees to follow its ‘5-Action April Challenge’ from Living Green, Sony Music Group’s employee network group dedicated to sustainability. The challenge encouraged employees to take action to lower their environmental footprint on a long-term basis.

Universal Music Group’s “Green Team” was formed by a group of environmentally concerned California-based employees to foster sustainability in its offices and among staff throughout the US. From hosting beach clean-ups to driving awareness for environmental issues and beyond, the team works to identify and implement ways to enhance UMG’s U.S. green policies and practices.

Warner Music Group is working with employee resource groups to help champion and drive change. Projects have included encouraging employees in appropriate locations to use public transport or carpools to travel to events such as gigs – in many cases even offering a discount on citywide travelcards. Some offices have offered bicycles for employees to use instead of taxis for meetings that are a short distance away. For longer distance travel, certain Warner affiliates have now signed up to carbon offset schemes, in addition to the work the company is doing centrally.

Other Environmental Actions

In 2019, Sony Music UK, Warner Music UK and Universal Music UK became signatories of Music Declares Emergency. This organisation and its supporters call on governments and media institutions to recognise the ecological emergency and asks them to act on reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

In April 2021, Sony Music India won the India Chamber of Commerce Social Impact Award for Urban Reforestation. In collaboration with leading environmental NGO Green Yatra, the company is turning what used to be a dumping ground into an urban forest, planting over 40,000 trees between 2019-21.

Warner Music Group created the #WMSea initiative that pledges to help restore Indonesia's reef, and #WMTree, whose partnership with One Tree Planted helps to offset the devastation caused by the wildfires ravaging the Amazon rainforest, with 100,000 trees planted.

Universal Music regularly partners with One Tree Planted, a non-profit dedicated to global reforestation, to fund the planting of trees via initiatives including UMG's "Stream for Trees" (under which the company and its artists fund a new tree planting for each time selected music is streamed) and proceed shares from selected Bob Marley merchandise sales and The 1975 ticket sales, among other efforts.
